We are blessed at times with stories of triumph of the human spirit. This is one of those marvelous stories - particularly relevant because October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
This week, Sofia Sanchez, a charismatic and adorable seven-year-old, recorded a video that has gone viral with over 6 million views. Sofia was born in Ukraine and left at an orphanage because she has Down Syndrome. Jennifer and Hector Sanchez, two California residents, found Sofia and made the decision to adopt her. Sofia has thrived in the United States - her viral video shows her courage and positive attitude. She truly is an inspiration to us all.
Sofia is the niece of our Hackard Law attorney Zach Varanini. Zach's wonder and joy at his niece's spirit is an inspiration to all of us.
Sofia's parents made the wise decision to establish a Special Needs Trust for her and Joaquin. The Special Needs Trust is an important legal instrument for people with special needs and disabilities. Specifically, a Special Needs Trust allows someone to continue to receive public benefits, while having a fund from which to draw for necessities other than food and shelter. It gives both the Beneficiary and the Settlors, often times the Beneficiary's parents, peace of mind that the Beneficiary's finances will be taken care of, even after the passing of the Settlors.
You don't need to hear any more from me. Hear from Sofia. These are links to two great videos that will help you celebrate life and courage.
