Readiness Conference (Pre-Trial Conference / Settlement Conference)

prosecutor and the criminal defense attorney to discuss the facts of the case and see if the parties can agree to a plea bargain (settlement). Sometimes the court will indicate to the defense what sentence it is inclined to impose if the defendant were to plead guilty or no contest to particular charges.

If the criminal defense attorney and prosecutor come to an agreement—and if the defendant agrees—the defendant will change his plea to guilty or no contest. The court will then set the sentencing date and, in the case of a felony, refer the defendant to probation for a probation report.

If the parties cannot reach an agreement or if the defendant refuses the plea bargain, the trial date will be confirmed.
