It has been said that the first duty of government is to provide safety to its citizens. The first rule of families is to provide safety to its members. Thanksgiving is a time of joy, camaraderie and companionship. For many families across this country the holiday weekend included loss and grief.
The National Safety Council has released its estimates of fatalities from traffic crashes for the 2013 Thanksgiving Day holiday period, which began Wednesday morning, November 27, and ended Sunday evening, December 1. The Council estimates that during this busy holiday period that for every one of 436 motor vehicle traffic fatalities there were almost another 100 people injured (46,600) who required medical consultations.
"NSC issues fatality estimates for major holiday periods to draw attention to the need for drivers to exercise safe driving practices," said John Ulczycki, vice president of strategic initiatives at the National Safety Council. "It is especially important to highlight these numbers when a significant number of drivers are expected to be traveling on our roadways and highways."
Most fatal car accidents are caused by activities that needlessly endangered others. Someone did or didn't do something that caused great harm to others and often great loss to families. The family of the car crash victim cannot really be made whole; the loss of their loved one is needless and endless. It is said that when there is a wrongful death that it is not only the decedent who is gone; the family as it was constituted before the death is also gone.
Wrongful death lawsuits can help a victim's family secure compensation for matters that can be fixed (lost compensation) and to try to even the scales of justice for losses of loved ones. Aside from medical bills, funeral and burial costs, California allows a plaintiff in a wrongful death action to recover for the loss of the decedent's love, companionship, comfort, care, assistance, protection, affection, society and moral support. We at Hackard Law strive to ensure that a victim's family receives compensation. It is doing this that the community speaks as well - there should be severe penalties for those that needlessly endanger the safety of others.
