Concussion Dangers in Football

Just in time for football season, the American Academy of Pediatrics has released a comprehensive study covering the risks of concussion in high school football. According to the Academy's official medical journal Pediatrics, impacts to different areas of the head could result in concussions with varying degrees of severity.

What Pediatrics found in its research should be instructive to players, coaching staff and parents in the effort to minimize the danger of concussions. The journal concluded that in player-on-player collisions, 44.7% of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) resulted from impact to the front of the head, while 22.3% occurred on the side of the head.

In addition, the most dangerous area for a concussion was determined to be the top of the head, since traumatic brain injuries to this region carried a greater risk of loss of consciousness. Pediatrics' study group found that 8% high-school football players who suffered a concussion to the top of the head lost consciousness, in comparison with 3.5% who suffered impacts to other areas. That translates to a 56% greater chance of a player losing consciousness from a traumatic brain injury to the top of his head.

To deal with the risks of concussions, football coaches and training staff throughout America have reviewing and updating their approach to tackling, emphasizing "heads-up" techniques to minimize the possibility of impact to the top of the head. We hope that these measures will lead to a decline in the number of traumatic brain injuries on the playing field, as multiple concussions are a long-term danger that can exercise tragic effects on a player for the rest of his life.
