Joan Baez Concert | 50 Years Later
I’m Mike Hackard with Hackard Law. Fifty years ago, I was a senior at Sac State – now known as California State University, Sacramento. I was Student Body President.
Our Associated Students sponsored an October 1971 Joan Baez concert. It was memorable then. On reflection, it’s still memorable.
Tickets were $2.00. A capacity crowd of 12,000 attended.
Her songs are part of our history. They captured the era. They told stories. They evoked emotion. She put a human face to war, injustice, grief. In her words from her song, “Blessed Are,” “What comes to one must come to us all.”
This message resonates, resounds, and rings true. No matter our station in life.
It does help to put ourselves in the shoes of another. To restrain judgment. To see from another’s perspective. To find our common humanity even amidst our differences.
Even, as in my case, in litigation. Maybe not easily done, but very much worth the effort.
