How do we keep it fresh? It’s easy. Apply real-life experiences. Listen to callers’ questions. Tell stories that we want to tell. This is story that I want to tell: “Playing the Part Well.”

When I take a case, I want “to play the part well.” The advocacy part. The excellence part. The moral part.

People come to us with estate and trust cases. Some simple. Some readily solved. Some complex. I’m more likely to be involved in the complex.

There are three main parts to every case: the facts, the law, and the proof. Each element is challenging.  Facts might be clear – or cloudy. The law might be nuanced – conflicted – or changing. Proof might be elegantly simple – or frustratingly elusive.

I need to play my part well. I need to be a leader of my team. Doing well in trust litigation involves teamwork. Accountants review financial histories. Physicians review medical histories. Mock trial experts bring fresh insights.

Doing my part well is challenging. I’m opposing smart lawyers. Searching for missing assets. Dealing with time constraints.

We make demands on ourselves to do our jobs better. To learn from experience. From mistakes. Victory may provide few lessons. Defeat can be a powerful teacher. What went wrong? How can we fix it? What did we learn? How are we going to get better?
