Spotlight Abusive Conservators | CA Trust Attorney
I’m Mike Hackard with Hackard Law. We represent clients in estate, trust and elder financial abuse litigation cases throughout California.
This year I’ve noticed an encouraging trend – there’s been increased media spotlight on the conservatorship industry and its record of elder exploitation. You’ve probably seen the ongoing drama of Britney Spears and her efforts to break free from what she says is an oppressive conservatorship, along with the popular hashtag #FreeBritney.
There’s also the hit Netflix film I Care a Lot, which portrays a predatory conservator and her cold-blooded schemes to make millions off suffering and loneliness. And Sacramento’s ABC10 recently ran a week-long investigative series, titled The Price of Care, covering abuses within the California conservatorship industry.
And now Jane Wollman Rusoff of ThinkAdvisor, a top online magazine for financial advisors, spoke with me on the risks of conservatorships. Jane is a veteran journalist who’s written for The New York Times, Esquire and many other publications, and I’d like to thank her for a terrific interview on a topic that affects countless families across America.
I’m glad that the conservatorship industry is now getting necessary scrutiny after numerous and systemic cases of abuse and financial exploitation. And the more we speak out, the more we can push for positive change.
