Making Room Ch. 1 | Scooting Over for My Guardian Angel

Michael Hackard of Hackard Law

I was six years old in 1956 when I scooted over in my desk to make room for my guardian angel.

The desk was that palomino-colored wood—blonde as summer wheat—with silver metal legs and a hinged desktop. We still used the inkwell in the upper corner. The seat was bolted to the desk behind mine, all of us linked in careful rows at St. Ignatius Catholic School in Sacramento. This was 1956 Sacramento, when Catholic schools overflowed and nuns taught with the certainty of people who’d survived Depression and war.

Our teacher was teaching us the Guardian Angel Prayer: “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love entrusts me here, ever this day be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule, and to guide.”

I scooted over. Not metaphorically—I actually moved my small body right, creating space for this invisible protector I knew was there.

Some of my classmates moved over too. Most didn’t notice. But I was serious about that space, that presence, that help I already sensed I’d need.

Seven decades later, what strikes me: how undramatic it was. No visions, no voices. Just a six-year-old boy scooting over in his desk, making room for help he couldn’t see but knew was there.

The nuns didn’t make it complicated. They taught us to make room for angels, acknowledge their presence, understand we were accompanied through life by beings whose job was to light, guard, rule, and guide.
