Inheritance Heists Ch. 9: Caregivers & Elder Financial Exploitation

I’m Mike Hackard with Hackard Law.  I’m sharing passages from my new book Inheritance Heists – and I hope that they can help you avoid estate disaster.

Today we’ll begin covering caregiver exploitation – and it’s crucial to understand its magnitude.

According to the National Council on Aging, approximately one in ten Americans aged sixty-plus have experienced some form of elder abuse, with some estimates ranging as high as five million elders abused each year. Financial exploitation, often perpetrated by caregivers, is one of the most common forms of elder abuse.

In California alone, Adult Protective Services (APS) receives more than 200,000 reports of elder and dependent adult abuse annually. While not all of these cases involve caregiver exploitation, a significant portion do.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and legal intervention in cases of caregiver exploitation. Next time we’ll look at patterns of undue influence when a caregiver hijacks estate assets.

If you suspect undue influence by a caregiver in an estate dispute and you need help, you can call us at Hackard Law: 916-313-3030.  We want to hear your story.
